[태그! Tag! (2)]

검색에 대한 고민, 태그! Tag! (1)에 이어서...

스크랩을 잘(?) 활용하고 있는 네이버 블로그를 예로 들어보자. 굳이 분류하자면 남에게 보여줄려고 스크랩하는 블로거가 있는 반면, 자기 자신만의 정보를 관리하기 위해 스크랩하는 블로거 두 종류로 나누어진다. 물론 자기 자신의 정보를 관리하면서 그것을 공유하여 두가지 목적을 달성하는 경우도 있다.

이러한 스크랩 활동은 원문 스토리를 그대로 복사하는 것이다. 반면 Tag라는 것은 스토리를 복사해서 유통시키는 것이 아니라 링크가 있는 키워드를 통해 유통시킨다. 그렇기 때문에 Tag는 Tag들의 묶음이라 할 수 있는 검색과 밀접한 메타포를 지니고 있는 것이다.

자, 태그로 성공했다는 해외 모델을 불러와 보자. flickr(플리커), del.icio.us(딜리셔스). 둘다 야후에 의해 인수되었다는 공통점이 있으나 속성은 분명 다르다. 하나는 매우 주관적인 태깅이며 개인의 사진 관리가 주 목적이다. 다른 하나는 직관적 태깅이지만 비교적 전문적이며 개인의 북마크 관리 및 타인과의 북마크 연결이 주 목적이다. 둘의 공통점은 자신의 자료 묶음을 공유한다는 것이지만, 다른 점은 하나는 대중적인 것이고 다른 하나는 전문적인 구루들의 의한 것이다.

사실 플리커는 이미지를 공유하기 위해 태그를 적절하게 사용한 것이 유효했다 볼 수 있다. 사진 이미지 파일은 실제로 데이터를 넣지 않는 이상 수집, 검색하기 힘든 데이터다. 즉 이미지 파일은 파일명을 제대로 쓰지 않는다면 검색으로 끌어낼 방법이 없다. 즉 메타데이터가 부족하다. 여기에 플리커는 태그 한 두단어 입력으로 길죽하게 스토리를 적지 않아도 관리할 수 있고 유통될 수 있게 하였으니 태그는 매우 유용한 function 인 것이다.

반면 딜리셔스의 소셜북마크가 다루는 웹 페이지들은 나름 메타데이터들을 품고 있다. 왠만한 검색엔진이면 요 페이지가 구글 검색 이야기인지 야후의 미디어 뉴스기사인지 뽑아 낼 수 있다. 즉 별도의 태그는 기존 정보에서 그냥 덤으로 추가되는 추가 키워드 정보일 뿐이다. 근데 이것이 의미있는 것은 검색이란 것이 링크들을 쭈욱 살펴봐야 하는데 최근에 올라온 것들은 링크의 히스토리가 빈약하여 좋은 정보로의 상위 점수를 주기 힘들다는 점이다. 하지만 딜리셔스는 이러한 검색의 시기적합성에 있어 최근 관심받는 웹페이지를 보여주고 그게 무엇인지를 쉽게 알려주는 태그를 붙이면서(사람이 직접, 빨리) 검색엔진의 부족한 점을 매꿔주고 있다. 이것이 딜리셔스가 사용자에게 제공하는 가치인 것이다.

그렇다면 국내에서는 위의 두가지 성공모델을 그대로 따라하면 될까? 라는 질문이 있을 수 있겠다. 또한 여전히 태깅이란 작업이 국내 사용자에게 참여를 이끌어 낼 만한가라는 질문이 포함되어 있을 것이다. 일단 개인에게 가치를 줄 수 없다면 어렵다고 본다. 이타적인 인간도 일단 이기적인 인간에서 출발한다.:-) 단순한 링크 공유로는 평판을 얻을 수 없다면 과연 참여를 어떻게 이끌어 낼 것인가가 과제다. 평판만으로 안된다면 다른 가치를 제공해 주어야 할 것이다. 그것 Collective Intelligence로 표현되든 Collective Emotion으로 창발되든 말이다.
